I guess the problem is not to do with that i "cant" disable these connections, its more to do with the fact that it's really strange that disabling causes shutdown problems By gently canceling the install it reset svchost's dont-go-into-standby setting, and voila standby happiness. As it turns out, it was Adobe Type Manager (possibly conflicting with the keyboard driver) since standby now works after uninstalling ATM and rebooting the computer.
