This particular case pertains to Vista, but the general techniques are applicable to XP as well. It seems every process decides to spike at once at random intervals. If you allow all them to do this, they will compete for and use system resources resulting in poor performance and a slow computer. start at Logon.

Doing this might speed up your apps at start up. All the programs you see listed are not part of standard Windows XP. SMART provides a lot of data, some of which is crap :-) but some of which is very useful.
