I had the same problem where everytime I plug my hard drive in, Windows would just freeze until I remove it. I've swapped SATA cables, ports on the motherboard, power connectors.... You'll need to check your system documentation to determine the exact steps. If USB somehow was moved up in the boot sequence, then you'll also run into this problem whenever you connect any USB hard drive to your PC.
